Pink boots for a rainy day
I have a niece! She was born Friday, February 16th 2007 at 2:50 pm after a mere 8 hours of labor in part of my sis (but the last two and a half hours was straight pushing, and it was harsh).

Christ, I'm not even up for anything else after that. I hate a project for my graphics design class that Mary helped me out with, so that's in good shop. Have to read all of Housekeeping for my good books class this week, but it's not horrifically long. I just have to read 44 pages a day next week and I'll be done. Damn, I have a lot of shit to read for journalism class tomorrow, though.

An unexpected comfort

The sound of my great-grandparents' fiftieth anniversary clock chiming off a slow little tune every hour on the hour while I visited is a very clear memory from my childhood. Whenever I'd hum that little tune, I could see the bottle-green of the living room rug, the couch with a bright orange crocheted throw over the back (that Grandpa Holm called a davenport) and the crystal candy dish full of cheap mints. The bright kitchen where I'd play on the linoleum jumped up fresh as last second's breath when I hummed that song.

Through a complicated series of circumstances, I came into possession of that clock after my Grandpa died. I kept it with me for years, through move after move, and now it sits on the bookshelf in my living room. I like looking at it, but I was always sad that it stopped chiming once it left my Grandpa's house.

Well, Andrew and Katie fixed it (it just needed a battery, of all silly ass things) and now I hear my Grandpa's clock chime every hour on the hour. I love it.

Death Be Not Proud by John Gunther: Given its universal themes, it's not surprising that Death Be Not Proud has "never been out of print," as the book's afterword states.

Apparently I'm going through this phase where I need to be really fucking bitch to the world at large to cope with it. Good to know!

Anyway. What is the name of this song?

Oh, me

I told my sis she should name her baby Calla Laella, because I thought it was lovely as lovely gets, but she's sticking with Natalie Michelle. Well, then, I'm adopting Calla as my new lj name. So there, sis!

My Mary came over tonight, and we just sat around, alternately rambling and being completely silent, and listened to music. It was great.

The homegrown actually got me kind of high tonight. And it was definitely a good night for it.

Starting over

It's weird to be starting a journal and not have anyone who knows about it. I kind of like this, though. My other lj just was not working out; too many people on my flist who knew me when I was young and don't know me now, and too many others who knew the worst aspects of me. This is a good, clean start.

I have no idea what to write about, though. Hahaha.
